We present a molecular dynamics-based study of the mechanical properties of Nano-porous Au foams under compression and tension with identical morphologies, but varying ligament diameters. Compression and tension tests of these porous microstructures are compared to similar tests conducted for gold nanowires, and the validity of Gibson-Ashby scaling at small ligament sizes is investigated. A significant tension/compression asymmetry in the mechanical response of the foam is found that strongly depends on the ligament diameter. A model is presented for this asymmetry based on the contribution of the free surfaces present in the foams.
