We have recently shown that localized photothermal heating achieved by solar illumination of absorber- coated membranes is a highly promising strategy for converting conventional membrane distillation, an energy-intensive process, into an entirely solar-driven process. Transforming this approach into a solar technology radically alters the scaling laws that govern this process. We have examined several strategies for boosting performance that involve light management and modification of heat transfer within the NESMD approach.
